When selecting the correct cover size for an RV, it is important to use the correct measurement theory. All of our motorhome and trailer RV covers do an excellent job in repelling moisture and protecting your RV from rain, snow, and harmful UV rays from the sun.
Covers from both Adco Products and Classic Accessories are water-resistant and sized specifically as Class A covers, Class C motorhome covers, travel trailer covers, fifth wheel covers, and camper covers They also are designed to breathe, allowing trapped moisture to escape so that mold and mildew do not form beneath the cover. Both Classic Accessories and Adco covers also have zipper doors so you can access the RV while the cover is installed.
Why Is It Important To Get The Proper RV Cover Measurement?
The biggest threat to the longevity of your RV cover is the wind. Movement due to billowing and sustained wind causes the cover to rub against hard surfaces and wear through the fabric. The idea is to get the RV cover fit as tight as possible. All covers come with bottom, front and back cinches to tighten, and the best covers have an additional cinch around the bottom of the body to prevent billowing.
But if your cover is bigger than it should be, it won't be possible for those cinches to gather enough of the excess fabric to get the tightness required. Conversely, if the cover is too small, it will be difficult to get it on the RV and you could tear the fabric just by installing it. So it's important to purchase the correct size range.
Also, if you do purchase the wrong size and want to return the item, we're happy to do that for you to make it right. The issue you might face doing that is getting the cover back in the box!
Covers are large, bulky items, so to reduce shipping costs, the cover manufacturers vacuum pack their covers. This reduces the size of the shipped product to a manageable size. However, when it is unpacked, it expands to many times its packed size, and getting it re-packed is difficult without specialized equipment.
How To Make An Accurate Measurement Of Your RV
As long as you are purchasing the correct cover for your type of RV, the width and height measurements are not relevant (except for some extra tall fifth wheels.) The manufacturers know what widths and height ranges are normal for a particular RV type (Class A, Class B, Travel Trailer, etc.)
The key measurement you need to have is the length, which should include the measurement from the longest two points on the very front of the RV to the very back.
- BE SURE TO INCLUDE the maximum distance your rear bumper, tire carrier, and/or ladder protrudes from the back of the RV to the measurement.
- DO NOT INCLUDE the tongue on a travel trailer, only measure the actual body of the coach. If you have a trailer with a rounded nose, measure from the furthest point forward. For a motorhome, start at the front of the bumper.
- If you have a Motorhome, measure from the very front of the bumper or bunk area, whichever if farther forward.
- If you are measuring for a Fifth Wheel, your front measurement point will be the forwardmost point on the nose of the trailer.
How To Select The Right RV Cover For Your Measurement
Once you have the length measured, select the cover in the correct length range for that range. Feet and inches is always the unit of measurement used. Here are some examples:
- If your RV length measures 23 feet, and your choices are 20'1"-23' or 23'1"-26', get the 20'-23' version.
- If your RV length measures 23'1", and your choices are 20'1"-23' or 23'1"-26', get the larger one.
The covers have extra fabric built-in, so they're actually a little larger at the largest length, so you don't need the next largest size up if your RV is shorter or on the dividing line between ranges. Stick with using the RV cover manufacturers' length ranges with the actual measured length of your RV
Also, there is always enough room built into RV covers to account for any air conditioners, satellite dishes, or other protrusions on the roof, so don't worry about it being large enough there either.
You will not need a custom-fit RV cover to have great results and longevity. As long as you make sure that you measure correctly when selecting your class A RV cover or 5th wheel cover
And don't forget to add tire covers to your order to protect your tires from damage from the sun and the wind. With tires, it's also a good idea to get some plastic sheeting or wood from Home Depot to form a barrier between the ground and the tire. This will prevent moisture from seeping up into the tire itself. Water can cause premature tire failure if it wicks up into the tire rubber.
Installing the Cover
Once you receive your RV cover, make sure that you install it according to the manufacturer's instructions and use this RV Cover Installation Guide. Also, ensure that the cover is on as tightly as possible. If you store your RV in an especially windy area, this is especially important. It might be a good idea also to purchase some additional tie-down straps from Home Depot to make the cover even more immobile than the installed straps and cinches allow for.
Protecting Your RV Investment
If you select a good quality cover for your RV and measure your unit accurately so that you have the best possible fit, you will enjoy longevity for your RV Cover. You will also maximize the protective benefits of the cover for the big investment in your RV.
Don't forget also that RV covers protect your RV against more than the effects of rain, snow, and ice. Leaving your RV cover on during the summer can help prevent the negative effects of UV rays on your roof and sidewall surfaces and sealants. It can also prevent plastic components on your exterior from becoming brittle prematurely.
An RV cover is a big investment in itself, but getting and using one correctly, including an accurate fit, is a great way to protect your recreational investment. Make sure you use the information we've provided here to get a great fit.
